A small introduction about you ✨
I'm a lifelong nerd based in Madrid, Spain. Even though I have a humanities background, I have always tinkered with computers. During the pandemic I started coding for the fun/challenge of it and started down that path. A couple university-level classes and a web development bootcamp later, I have been working as a web developer since last year.
If you could instantly become an expert in something, what would it be and why?
I would love to be an expert in learning (metalearning)! Even though AI is a great tool, it can give one an illusion of competency. The only way to keep up with the pace of change is to keep learning/swimming, while enjoying the ride! I try to integrate many tools and techniques (Zettelkasten with Logseq, Anki, etc.). But I have to remember that practice always beats theory (and shiny new things/tools/hacks).
Do you have any helpful advice for people that want to pursue the same career as you?
There is no lack of available tools online but a mentor might be a good idea. You could instruct an AI chatbot to act as your sherpa. But remember to tell him to prod you in the right direction and not to try to please you!
It is true that the best way is to learn-by-doing but sometimes you can get stuck in tutorial hell (hello again, illusion of competency). You learn more by debugging (stepping line-by-line or even rubber ducking) than by copy-pasting.
Try to remember that, to quote The Artist's Way, "it is impossible to get better and look good at the same time". Programming humbles everyone. In the humanities, you can gently persuade to make your point. You can't reason or persuade code that will not compile. But you can always try hacking at it.
